CHAdeMO Fast Charger installation continues its steep growth. European installation reaches the 1000 mark

Association & protocol news

The total number of CHAdeMO fast chargers in Europe has reached the 1000 bar, demonstrating a 70% growth from the previous year

2013 was yet another year of steep growth for CHAdeMO-certified fast chargers in Europe. The total number of CHAdeMO fast chargers in Europe has reached the 1000 bar, demonstrating a 70% growth from the previous year.

A strong growth in the number of CHAdeMO fast chargers installed was seen in all parts of the world. In one year from January 2013 to January 2014, the number increased:

Japan: 1381 => 1967 (+42%)
Europe: 601 => 1020 (+70%)
USA: 154 => 554 (+360%)

With this, the overall CHAdeMO installation count has reached over 3500 globally, confirming CHAdeMO as the global leader and the only widely commercialised fast charging technology. These CHAdeMO fast chargers serve over 131,000 EV drivers, accounting two thirds of the passenger EV market today*.

Commenting on the continued success of CHAdeMO charger installation in Europe for the year 2013, Jorge Sanchez, Head of e-mobility, ENDESA (President Company, CHAdeMO Association in Europe) said: “We are pleased to see this result as this is a clear testimony that CHAdeMO fast charging technology has won trust of investors and consumers alike in different countries in Europe.”

Igor Demay, VP, EV Technical Coordinator, PSA, also welcomes this development: “On top of Peugeot iOn and Citroën C-Zero that have become the reference of EVs in all over Europe, in 2013 we have launched Peugeot Partner and Citroën Berlingo EVs, assembled in Spain, equipped with the CHAdeMO inlet. We are certain that fast-chargeable LCV EVs** will present attractive options for business owners for their fleet use, and having a dense network of fast chargers is indispensable for further EV adoption.”
CHAdeMO fast chargers can be found in 25 countries across Europe at locations such as highway service stations linking major cities as well as in shopping centre car parks, replenishing an empty battery to around 80 per cent of its capacity less than 30 minutes. Countries like Ireland, Denmark and Estonia have already established a nation-wide CHAdeMO charging network and the EV drivers can benefit from fast charging stations every 50 kilometres. Norway and the Netherlands shall be equipped with a similar network of chargers soon.

CHAdeMO fast charging protocol is expected to be certified by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in the first quarter of 2014. With the recent entry of other fast charging protocols into the market, CHAdeMO Association believes that multi-system chargers that are equipped with multiple connectors should be the answer going forward.

With multi-standard chargers, EV drivers can simply select, like Regular and Diesel, the right connector for the EV they drive. Depending on the EV mix of the region, this can be an attractive and practical solution for EV drivers, investors, and automakers. More than anything, such multi-standard chargers should help accelerate e-mobility in Europe, which is essential.” affirms Joseph Beretta, President of AVERE-France.

Founded in 2010, CHAdeMO Association represents a cross-industry member network ranging from charger manufacturers, automakers, utilities, local governments, to charging service operators. It has over 430 member organisations across 28 countries, of which 70 are in Europe, including PSA Peugeot Citroën, ABB, Schneider Electric, E.ON, ENEL and Endesa.
