A decade of in-market experience with V2G/VGI
While the electrification of transports is required to achieve carbon neutrality, the mass adoption of EVs may strain the grid, as many users start charging their vehicles at around the same time and renewable-based energy productions have the problem of intermittency which requires flexible energy sources to complement.
The bi-directional EV charging function, typically called vehicle-to-grid (V2G) or vehicle-grid-integration (VGI), can avoid such power congestions and ensure the efficient integration of renewable energy sources.
Today, CHAdeMO is the only charging protocol in the world with the bidirectional charging (V2G) functionality enabled, with mass-market production and the certification system in place to ensure interoperability across EVs and V2G devices. To date, there are more than 20 bi-directional charger models available and over 10,000 such units are installed in Japan and the world.

CHAdeMO-based V2G demo projects
Projects using V2G capacities of CHAdeMO protocol have been going on around the world since 2012. Recently, their scale and numbers have been growing, with more and more initiatives in Europe and the US. These demonstration projects provide valuable findings and data for large scale market deployment of V2H/ V2G technology.
